Santa Fe National Forest - Pecos Ranger District - Beatty's Cabin

The Labor Day weekend work project took place at the historic Beatty’s cabin in the Pecos Wilderness.  Pecos Chapter members Richard, Amber & Abby Kingsbury, along with Richard Hall, Patty Wilbur, Peter Harris and Cheryl Nigg all  packed in from the Jack’s Creek campground. The focus for the weekend was to replace the damaged roof on the outhouse and continue repairs to the corrals. Participants rode out midmorning on Saturday, and returned to the campground Monday afternoon.

A total of 8 pack stock brought in the needed supplies, tools, lumber and feed  to complete this project. This also included  participants  food and personal gear. Members completed over 80 collective hours of labor for this project.

Before work could begin on the outhouse roof, a large, over hanging deadfall had to be removed.  Once the old roof was removed, a new, stronger frame was built. The completed roof was finished with new roofing paper, shingles, metal side flashing and a fresh coat of paint.

The corral repairs required cutting and collecting several small trees to replace the damaged poles. Several hundred feet of wire was wrapped to discourage chewing by equines. Several of the support posts were reinforced and two of the three gates were rebuilt.

This was a very productive weekend and all future visitors to Beatty’s cabin will benefit from the hard work of the Pecos Chapter volunteers.
